Overview:

Be escorted by your guide to a Little Penguin and Short-tailed Shearwater rookery to view these birds returning to their burrows from the ocean after dusk. Penguins can be viewed during most of the year, but Shearwaters are only present between September and April. There is also the option of visiting other areas with your guide in search of some of Bruny Island's other nocturnal wildlife such as Tasmanian Pademelons and Eastern Quolls which are now only found in Tasmania, as well as Bennett’s Wallabies and Brush-tailed Possums both of which are also found in a rare near-albino colour morph on Bruny Island. Long-nosed Potoroo, Tawny Frogmouth and Southern Boobook are also possibilities, with an outside chance of seeing the endemic Tasmanian Bettong or the endangered Masked Owl. It is also possible to see the Southern sky in all it’s brilliance on a clear night, including the Southern Cross, Milky Way, Orion, various planets and maybe even the Aurora australis during more active solar periods.

Because the Bruny Island ferry does not operate at night, people taking this tour must stay on the island overnight.

We have three lovely cottages available at Inala if you would like to stay with us.

Inala Night Tour

We had an amazing Night Tour with Inala on Bruny Island. Watching the Shearwaters come in and seeing the baby penguins awaiting mom and dad was simply magical. We also saw some bioluminescence in the waves at "The Neck". Absolutely stunning! Would highly recommend Inala for specialized birding and wildlife tours. We did a morning property tour with them and saw plenty of birdlife, including the endangered Forty-Spotted Pardalote.

Inala Nature Tours - Bruny Island

A visit to Bruny Island not complete without visiting Inala. I spent two nights on the property in a very comfortable cabin enabling me to explore the trails and viewing platforms that get you up close to wildlife. Perfect for observing and photographing the endemic birds and animals that inhabit this special part of Tasmania. Highly recommended for groups and solo travelers! Be sure to book a night tour with an Inala guide to see the nocturnal animals not often seen by casual tourists. Cat was my guide and she knows all the places to take you for observing quolls and possums and other hard to spot creatures!

2 superb day & night tours with Inala

We have just completed a 2 night stay at Inala in Nairama lodge. The lodge is very comfortable and the provisions for breakfast more than 2 people could possibly eat but everything fresh including orange juice freshly squeezed. We had a night tour with Cat on our first evening and what a fountain of knowledge Cat proved to be. Our sightings of nocturnal mammals was tremendous helped by great explanations of all of them by Cat.
The next morning an early start and a shout from Toni enabled us to view the white Goshawk feeding in the field by the reception office. There are so many amazing birds at the reserve and Cat was an amazing spotter as she continued to be for the rest of the day in our tour of the island looking for birds and mammals including the white wallaby. Would recommend a tour to anyone who’s is interested in the special birds and mammals of Bruny in particular and also Australia. Thank you so much

Bird tours (endemics and night tour)

Inala tours was incredible and I highly recommend them! They were able to accommodate me very last minute! The guide, Andrew, was so patient and didn't give up listening for the birds until we were able to spot particular species. He was incredibly knowledgeable about not only the bird life, but Tasmanian vegetation, history, and Aboriginal history. We went to very specific spots that only true locals would know. One of the best birding experiences I have ever had worldwide! Thank you so much :)
